Cookies Policy
Last updated: 20 September 2026
This Cookies Policy explains what cookies are, which ones Nelof uses, why we use them, and how you can control or remove them. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which covers personal data more broadly.
What Cookies Are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. When you return to the site, the browser sends that file back, which is how a website can remember anything at all between page loads. Cookies cannot run programs or carry viruses.
Several other technologies do a similar job and we treat them the same way in this policy: local storage and session storage in your browser, pixels and web beacons in pages and emails, and device identifiers used by advertising systems. Where we say “cookies” below, we mean all of these.
First-Party and Third-Party Cookies
First-party cookies are set by nelof.com itself and can only be read by us. Third-party cookies are set by other companies whose content appears on our pages, such as advertising networks and the platforms that supply our games. Those cookies can only be read by the company that set them, and they are governed by that company’s own policy, not ours.
The Cookies Nelof Uses
Strictly necessary cookies
These keep the site functioning and are always active. They do things like preserve your session while you move between pages, remember that you have dismissed a notice, and protect the contact form against automated spam submissions. We do not ask for consent for these because the site cannot work without them, and they are not used for advertising or tracking across other websites.
Preference cookies
These remember choices you make so the site behaves consistently, such as a search you ran or a display setting. They are convenience only. If they are blocked, the site still works, it just forgets things it would otherwise remember.
Analytics cookies
These help us count visits and understand how the site is used in aggregate. They tell us which games are being played, which categories are popular, where pages load slowly, and where visitors give up and leave. We use that to decide what to add to the library and what to fix. We look at this data as totals and trends, not to identify individual people.
Advertising cookies
Nelof is free to use and is paid for by advertising. Advertising cookies are set by third-party ad networks, including Google AdSense. They are used to control how often you see a given ad, to measure whether ads are working, to detect ad fraud, and, where you have not opted out, to select ads that are more relevant to your interests based on your browsing.
We do not control these cookies and we cannot read them. Google’s use of advertising cookies is described at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
Cookies Set by the Games Themselves
This one catches people out, so it is worth reading. The games on Nelof are not hosted by us. They are third-party browser games that we embed in an iframe, primarily through the games platform GamePix. When you load a game, your browser connects to that provider directly.
The game provider can then set its own cookies and use your browser’s local storage. In practice this is usually how a game saves your progress, your level, your settings and your high score, which is why your scores are still there when you come back. The provider may also run its own analytics and serve advertising inside the game frame.
Two consequences follow from this. First, if you clear your browser’s cookies and site data, your saved game progress will usually disappear, because it was stored on your device and nowhere else. We cannot restore it. Second, if you block all third-party cookies and storage, some games will fail to save progress or may not load at all.
How Long Cookies Last
Session cookies are deleted as soon as you close your browser. Persistent cookies stay on your device for a set period, which can range from a few days to a couple of years depending on their purpose, or until you delete them yourself. Advertising cookies tend to be the longest lived.
How to Control Cookies
You are in charge here, and you have several options.
- Browser settings. Every major browser lets you view the cookies stored on your device, delete them individually or all at once, block third-party cookies, and block cookies from specific sites. Look for the privacy or site data section of your browser settings.
- Private or incognito browsing. Opening the site in a private window means cookies are discarded when you close the window. Your game progress will not survive the session.
- Personalised advertising opt-outs. You can turn off personalised ads from Google at Google Ads Settings, from many networks at once at aboutads.info/choices, and in Europe at youronlinechoices.com.
- Do Not Track. Some browsers send a Do Not Track signal. There is still no agreed industry standard for responding to it, so we cannot promise that every third party on our pages honours it.
Be aware that opting out of personalised advertising does not remove advertising. You will see the same number of ads, they will just be less relevant to you.
What Happens If You Block Cookies
Blocking analytics and advertising cookies will not stop you playing games on Nelof. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may break the contact form and other parts of the site. Blocking third-party storage will, in many cases, stop games saving your progress. Nothing you block will be held against you, and we will not nag you about it.
Changes to This Policy
As we add features or change advertising partners, the cookies in use may change. When that happens we will update this page and revise the date at the top.
